Note: This map shows the distribution of the population of the German Empire in urban and rural districts. It is based on the census of 1 December 1900. The legend at right shows the percentage of the population in urban districts, which are defined as districts with more than 2,000 inhabitants. Squares designate urban communities with 100,000 or more inhabitants, circles those with fewer than 100,000 inhabitants. The inset at bottom right zooms in on the Rhine-Ruhr industrial district in the Prussian provinces of Rhineland and Westphalia.
