Notes: This legend is associated with the maps in this Online Supplement (e.g. Map S.3.1 on 1871) that show the result of individual Reichstag elections in Saxony from 1871 to 1912. The inner circle in each constituency represents the number of voters who cast a ballot; the outer circle represents all eligible voters (that is, potential voters): by comparing the size of the two circles one can see the approximate percentage turnout. The different parties’ share of votes cast is indicated by the colors in the inner circle. Constituency winners are indicated by the background color of the constituency. See also “Elections to the German Reichstag (1871-1890): A Statistical Overview,”  which lists, for each national election, the number of votes won by each party, its share of the vote, its number of seats won, and its share of seats won: James Retallack, ed., Forging an Empire: Bismarckian Germany (1866-1890), vol. 4 of German History in Documents and Images (GHDI), sec. 7; and “Elections to the German Reichstag (1890-1912),” in Roger Chickering with Steven Chase Gummer and Seth Rotramel, eds., Wilhelmine Germany and the First World War (1890-1918), GHDI vol. 5, sec. 5.
